The 3rd episode of the Money Museum podcast “What if money could talk?” tells us about Alves Reis, who became known as one of the greatest scamsters in Portuguese history.
This scam involved the famous duplicates of the 500 escudos banknotes.
These illegal banknotes were practically impossible to tell apart from the banknotes legally issued by the Banco de Portugal! They had been produced by the same manufacturer, with the same paper and the same security features. And on top of that, they had the same serial numbers!
