Based on archaeological evidence recovered during the excavations of the old church of S. Julião, a view of Lisbon penned by Simão de Miranda and some objects from the period, the Money Museum presents a new temporary exhibition.
The exhibition "Lx 14 mayo 1575" reveals a little of the experience of the city of Lisbon on this Wednesday, May 14, 1575 - apparently a day like many others.
In 1575, Portugal became a full-fledged commercial empire on a global scale, pioneering the opening of maritime routes between Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas.
Goods transit from all over the planet in Lisbon and the city grows, diversifies and consolidates itself as a cosmopolitan centre.
Its gateway is the Tagus River, through which dozens of boats circulate daily.
Aboard one of these ships, Simão de Miranda, a Portuguese in the service of the Duke of Turin, spends the short time available to him on a brief stopover in Lisbon drawing a quick, yet concise, and impressive view of the city, seen from the Tagus river.
Nevertheless In this extraordinary «snapshot» of 1500s’ Lisbon, the most striking feature is the caption:
Lisbon May 14, 1575.
By the very virtuous Senhor Simão de Miranda.
And so begins this new exhibition at the Money Museum.
