How do you draw a banknote? A conversation with José Bandeira | Podcast “E se o dinheiro falasse?”
From an idea to the first sketch, the process of creating a banknote involves much more than just lines and colours. There are mandatory elements, security requirements and technical specifications that challenge the creativity of banknote designers.
To help us learn more about how a note is drawn, we invited José Bandeira, a well-known Engraver and Designer at the Portuguese Mint (Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda).
José Bandeira has authored numerous works throughout his career, such as engravings and identification and security documents, as well as banknotes and coins. He took part in producing the first series of coins minted after the independence of Timor-Leste and in the graphic design of Macao’s last generation of banknotes under Portuguese rule, issued in 1990, shortly before it’s sovereignty was handed over to China.
